From 20th to 21th November 2025, I had the opportunity to participate in the workshop ‘Promovieren in der Germanistik’ (Doctoral Studies in German Studies), organised by the Austrian Society for German Studies (ÖGG) in Graz. Over two consecutive days, several doctoral students specialising in various areas of German-language-research discussed the conditions, challenges and joys of doctoral studies with the speakers. Realising that we all face similar challenges, we recognised the value of supporting each other and building a solid academic network. During the workshop, we presented our respective dissertation projects in poster presentations and discussed them with our peers. At the end of the first day, we were also able to attend the award ceremony for the ‘Wendelin Schmidt-Dengler Prizes 2025’.

On the second day, we reflected on the workshop’s outcomes and discussed solutions to the structural issuesfaced by doctoral students in German Studies. Finally, we were able to enjoy the wintery, snow-covered city of Graz and its Christmas markets, where we reminisced about the workshop and the last two days in a friendly atmosphere.

The workshop provided an excellent opportunity to network and exchange ideas with other doctoral students. I particularly appreciated the participation of several doctoral students from Hungary, whose presence broadened the perspective on ‘German Studies Abroad.’ Overall, I found the workshop to be extremely valuable on both a personal and academic level, and I am already looking forward to future ÖGG events.
